How to Speak with Charisma

The thought of speaking before an audience can be unnerving for many. Invariably, thoughts come to mind before and during delivery, filling one with dread. Once terrified, how can one take it to the next level towards becoming a charismatic speaker?

Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO assures, “With practice, anyone canlearn the ropes of effective public speaking. Mastery requires practice. But it all boils down to the medium – YOU. As you work on your message, graphics, and Powerpoint, remember that the audience is focused on you. Make the best of each situation by learning to overcome fear and connect with your audience.”

She offers these helpful tips:

1. Prepare yourself by coming prepared and looking your best. Nothing beats knowing your speech by heart, knowing you look good, and believing in yourself.

2. Do not dwell on the state of your nerves. Quell the self-defeating thoughts. Breathe, take a few steps as you start your speech, and stay focused at engaging your audience.

3. Control hand gestures by cupping your hands and eventually relaxing them, employing more natural gestures like you would in conversations.

4. Let the audience feel you are glad to be with them. Smile and connect.

5. Create audio-visual variety. For the eyes, use appropriate body movement, gestures, and demeanor. For the ears, modify your pitch, rhythm, and volume. Pauses can also be effective as you allow the audience to absorb your message.

There are many effective speaking styles to adapt. Remember to be yourself, be one with the audience, and de engaging to the eyes and ears.” adds Viesca.

“During the first few minutes of your presentation, your job is to assure the audience members that you are not going to waste their time and attention.”
